2. Foo Fighters(푸파이터즈) - Best Of You

힘들어하는 누군가를 위한 노래

푸 파이터즈(Foo Fighters)는 개인적으로 가장 좋아하는 밴드 중에 하나입니다. 너바나의 전 드러머라는 타이틀이 잊혀질만큼 유명해진 데이브 그롤(Dave Grohl)의 시원한 샤우팅과 열정넘치는 퍼포먼스는 보는 사람마저 에너지를 얻게하죠. All My Life, Monkey Wrench, The Pretender, Everlong, Run, Stick Around 등의 노래는 그들을 잘 표현하는 대표적인 노래라고 생각되는데요. 푸 파이터즈는 사운드적으로 잘 짜여진 음악을 추구한다고 생각됩니다. 테일러 호킨스(Taylor Hawkins)와 데이브 그롤이 보여주는 경지에 다다른 드럼을 기반으로 크리스 시플렛(Chris Shiflett), 팻 스미어(Pat Smear) 그리고 네이트 멘델(Nate Mendel)의 탄탄한 기타/베이스 연주는 오랫동안 합을 맞춘 관록을 보여줍니다. 어느 순간부터 푸 파이터즈의 음악은 멜로디가 귀에 와닿지 않더라도 꽉 찬 사운드를 듣기 위해서라도 찾게 되더라구요. 

하지만 제가 정말로 좋아하는 푸 파이터즈의 노래들은 따로 있습니다. 그들은 앨범에 꼭 감성적인(?, 다른 밴드의 음악과 비교하면 그런것도 아니지만) 노래들을 포함시키는 것을 알 수 있는데요. 2005년에 발매된 <In Your Honor>의 타이틀 곡인 Best of You가 대표적이라고 할 수 있겠습니다. 멜로디, 가사, 뮤직비디오, 그리고 데이브 그롤이 노래를 대하는 자세는 어딘가 감성적인 곳을 자극하는 지점이 있습니다. 위키를 참고해보니 그의 여동생이 힘든 일을 겪었을 때, 작곡한 노래라고 합니다. 어릴 때 노래 가사를 해석하는 것이 취미였는데, 도대체 "best of you"가 무슨 의미인지 모르겠어서 이리저리 찾아보던 기억이 납니다. 이 곡은 누군가로부터의 압박감, 공격 혹은 무시를 당하는 사람들을 위한 곡이라고 저는 해석하고 있는데, 정확한지는 잘 모르겠네요. 위키(Wikipedia)와 기사를 조금 읽어봤는데, 자신의 여동생(?)과 관련된 사연으로부터 탄생하게 된 곡이라고 하는데요. 출처는 정확하지 않지만, 여동생이 누군가와의 부당한 관계로부터 받게 되는 정신적인 압박감, 폭력을 표현한 것이라고 합니다. 

누군가를 신체적, 물리적으로 위협하는 것만이 폭력이 아니라고 말합니다. 나를 힘들게하고, 얽매이게 하는 무엇인가가 있다면 한 번쯤은 거절하고 반항해보는 것도 하나의 방법이라고 생각합니다. 물론 내가 느낀 폭력이 그 사람에게도 힘든 폭력이 될 수 있다는 것을 생각한다면 말입니다.
